|Recurring Event (See all)

One event on June 25, 2026 at 9:30 am

This hands-on training will equip participants with essential skills in:

  • Tree identification
  • Invasive species identification
  • Tree canopy assessment methods
  • Conducting tree inventories
  • Using GIS-based tools and software for field data collection and mapping

Participants will learn how geographic information systems (GIS) technology is used to document tree locations, assess canopy coverage, and collect environmental data that supports long-term planning and restoration efforts. Volunteers will gain practical experience using digital mapping and data collection tools commonly used in urban forestry and environmental conservation projects.

Designed for Henrico County staff and summer interns, this opportunity is also open to community members interested in supporting local environmental and reforestation efforts.

Participants who complete the training will be eligible to sign up for future site-specific canopy assessment and inventory projects within Henrico County parks. These efforts directly support the county’s ongoing reforestation program and long-term tree canopy expansion initiatives.

Whether you are passionate about conservation, climate resilience, urban forestry, GIS technology, or improving community greenspaces, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact while learning valuable field skills.

This summer, two training sessions will be held:

  • Thursday, June 4th @ Fairfield Library
  • Thursday, June 25th @ Libbie Mill Library
