SUMMARY:Faces of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Since 1619\, people of African ancestry have been woven into the American tapestry. Our Faces of Freedom event celebrates Africans and African Americans from the 1600s to today. \nAtumpan will perform traditional dance with drums to honor the first Africans. Historical interpreters will be on-site and on stage to introduce themselves and how they found freedom in a society where that was not always legal or the norm. \nWe will finish out our celebration with modern African American performances to showcase the joys and talents of the African American community today. \nInformation: sch107@henrico.gov

DESCRIPTION:Henrico County’s Juneteenth Celebration\nHenrico County Recreation and Parks is thrilled to invite you to our 2-day Juneteenth Celebration! \nFriday\, June 20: Juneteenth Jamboree\nCommunity Parade &  7v7 Football \nSaturday\, June 21: Juneteenth Event\nVendor Fair\, Kids Zone\, Live Entertainment\, Fireworks \n\nJuneteenth Jamboree\nOn Friday\, June 20\, we will host our first-ever Juneteenth Jamboree\, and you won’t want to miss it! Starting at 5 pm\, we’ll kick off a community parade at Baker Elementary School and wrap up at Varina High School. The parade will feature around 50 incredible local businesses and organizations. \nBut that’s not all! Following the parade\, from 6:30-9pm\, we’ll have an epic 7v7 football showdown announced by Shawn Mears. The competition will be between Henrico County’s very own high schools: Varina\, Highland Springs\, J.R. Tucker\, Glen Allen\, Deep Run\, and Henrico! DJ Amare will be on the ones and twos\, keeping the vibes going strong. Plus\, we’ll have food trucks serving up delicious bites for you to enjoy. \nWe can’t wait to celebrate and share this unforgettable day with you. IDs are required. \n\nHistory of Juneteenth\n \nJuneteenth celebrates enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the westernmost Confederate state of Texas. The Proclamation went into effect in 1863\, but this news was purposefully withheld from enslaved people until the arrival of Union troops in Galveston Bay\, Texas on June 19\, 1865. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. \nFirst flown in 2000\, the Juneteenth flag was designed by Ben Haith\, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration. \nLearn more about Juneteenth’s history and traditions.
