SUMMARY:Bike to Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Bike to Work Day is celebrated annually on the third Friday in May. In the spirit of the holiday\, we’d like to encourage employee participation in this national event. Plan your route\, put on your helmet and start pedaling! \nTips for Planning Your Route \nYour driving route could be very different from your biking route! Take the time to plan your morning and evening commute before Friday.\nPublic Works has created a map to view all bike lanes in Henrico County. Use this to help plan your route! \nSafety Tips \n\nBe a responsible bicyclist. Obey all traffic control devices and use proper hand signals.\nAlways ride in the direction of traffic.\nDress safely. Wear a helmet\, wear bright clothing and secure loose pant legs. Pick up your free WOAH! vest if you haven’t already!\nRide defensively. Anticipate the actions of other road users and watch for road hazards.\nPass vehicles with extreme care. Turning vehicles may not see you.\nBe aware of motor vehicle blind spots whether while riding or when stopped at an intersection.\nWalk your bicycle when you get into traffic situations beyond your cycling abilities.\nExercise great caution when riding in bus traffic. Watch out for buses pulling to and from curbs\, and passengers getting on and off buses.\nPark your bicycle so you do not block sidewalks\, handicap and building accesses\, or emergency drives.\nLock your bicycle. Secure both wheels and the frame to a stationary object using a sturdy lock. Most Henrico government buildings have bike racks available for use. Check out these newly installed ones by Henrico’s Environmental Action Resource Team!\n\nIf you choose to participate\, please send a picture to Beth Sanmartin at san082@henrico.gov. These photos may be used online or on social media. We’d love to see and celebrate you! \nIf you have questions or would like help planning a safe route\, please contact Ryan Levering at lev004@henrico.gov. Not only is Ryan a Public Works employee\, but he bikes to work any day he can!
